PORTAGE PARK — The opening of the long-awaited Aldi grocery store planned for Six Corners is delayed yet again.

Laura Branneman, Aldi’s Batavia Division vice president, said in a statement the company now plans to open the store early next year.

The Aldi will be on the corner lot owned by the company at 3911 N. Milwaukee Ave., according to property records and past project plans. Several “Coming Soon” Aldi signs were recently added to the perimeter of the property. A permit to add the temporary banners was approved June 12, according to building permit records.

Two permits to begin foundational work on the west side of the site at 3930 N. Kilpatrick Ave. are pending, records show.

In January, company officials said the store was going to open toward the end of this year. Brenneman said construction-related material delays have shifted the timeline back.

Project officials previously said the grocery store could open 11 months after construction on The Clarendale began, which would have been earlier this year.

Plans for a Six Corners Aldi, which have been in the works since 2018, call for the store to be connected to the Clarendale. However, plans changed once the lot was sold to Aldi’s Illinois division from one of the developers working with the retirement home on retail tenants, property records show.

Cheston Arthur, director of operations at Aldi, said in 2018 the Six Corners store would be similar in design to the one in Bucktown. Officials have previously said the store would be 21,000 square feet.

Other tenants for the ground floor of the senior development still have not been finalized, said Amelia Howard, executive director of The Clarendale building.

The Clarendale, a 10-story senior living complex with 258 residences and 11 affordable units, opened last month and began moving tenants into the high rise. A grand opening celebration is planned for August, when more residents will have moved in, Howard said.

Across the street on the Milwaukee Avenue side, GW Properties built a medical center at 3950 N. Milwaukee Ave. last year, offering primary care, cardiology services, skin disorder and eye care services, diabetes care and more.

The same developer hopes to build a shopping center and apartments on the lot behind the senior living homes, which has been empty since Peoples Gas left the property. Mitch Goltz, GW principal and founder, has repeatedly said rendering updates are coming since the project has switched partners and underwent a redesign. Updates could come in a few weeks, Goltz said Thursday.

Across from The Clarendale on Irving Park Road, the former Sears redevelopment at 4712-4738 W. Irving Park Road is being redeveloped into luxury apartments, a project expected to cost $90 million. 

The development will have 206 apartments — six of them affordable — that will be a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom units with rents of $2,750-$3,000 per month. Units are expected to be completed before the year is over, project officials previously said.

About 50,000 square feet of retail will take up the ground floor, with Target as the anchor tenant.
