Shell casings scattered around the parking lot as police investigate the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old man at Mariano’s, 2021 W. Chicago Ave., on Dec. 19, 2022.

The store was still open Monday afternoon, but a marked police car blocked off the ramp to the upstairs parking deck. Numerous shell casings could be seen on the ground as detectives investigated.

A store employee who didn’t disclose his name said he faintly heard the shots go off this afternoon, and customers ran back inside the store who had just left. He said store security guards told customers and employees to stay inside.

A company spokesperson said they are working with police and declined further comment.
