UKRAINIAN VILLAGE — A man was shot and killed in the parking lot of a neighborhood Mariano’s Monday afternoon, officials said.

At 4:27 p.m., the man, 37, was sitting inside a car in the parking lot of the store, 2021 W. Chicago Ave., when someone in another car came up, police said. Two men got out and fired shots.

The man, identified as Darian Neal by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, was shot in his head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The store was still open Monday afternoon, but a marked police car blocked off the ramp to the upstairs parking deck. Numerous shell casings could be seen on the ground as detectives investigated.

A store employee who didn’t disclose his name said he faintly heard the shots go off this afternoon, and customers ran back inside the store who had just left. He said store security guards told customers and employees to stay inside.

A company spokesperson said they are working with police and declined further comment.
