HYDE PARK — The South Side’s first Trader Joe’s at 1528 E. 55th St. will open to the public at 9 a.m. Oct. 18.

Planned festivities include live music, food tastings, giveaways and kid-friendly activities.

The 11,000-square-foot interior features murals of Hyde Park-area landmarks, like the Museum of Science and Industry — which will soon bear billionaire Ken Griffin’s name — Promontory Point and the Garden of the Phoenix in Jackson Park.

The store will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Crew members, hired during a ten-day period in mid-September, will begin work that day under store captain Ali Bennouna.

The store replaces Treasure Island Foods, a family-owned grocery chain which closed its seven locations last last October after 55 years in business.
