AVONDALE — Dark Matter Coffee is opening a new coffee shop across from Kuma’s Corner in Avondale, a company spokesman said Friday.

The new coffee shop is taking over a vacant storefront at 2901 W. Belmont Ave., spokesman Kyle Hodges said.

Exactly when the popular coffee roaster will start serving Avondale is unclear. Hodges wasn’t ready to divulge too many details, but he did say chocolate will be the focus of the new spot, specifically Mexico City-based La Rifa Chocolatería.

The spokesman also said to expect unique decor.

“It’s not going to look like any other Dark Matter location,” Hodges said, adding that La Rifa and Mexico City, where the chocolate company is based, served as inspiration.

Dark Matter was founded by Indianapolis native Jesse Diaz. According to Crain’s, Diaz answered a Craigslist ad for a job at Ukrainian Village’s Star Lounge in 2007 and then, three months later, the owners told them they wanted to sell, which is when he bought the shop (using $2,000 he borrowed from a childhood friend) and started building Dark Matter.

The now-popular coffee roaster currently runs seven coffee shops in neighborhoods across the city, from Lakeview to Ukrainian Village.
