IRVING PARK — Expect additional traffic delays on Irving Park Road just west of the Kennedy Expressway starting Monday.

The city’s Water Management department on Monday will begin installing some 5,000 feet of new 8-inch and 12-inch water mains on West Irving Park Road between North Kolmar and North Keeler avenues.

During the initial phase of the project, construction will be focused on the eastbound lanes. This first phase is expected to be done by December.

Crews started work on street resurfacing and restoration as well as telecommunication infrastructure improvement on a section of Irving Park Road between Cicero and Kolmar on Thursday.

For the most up to date information on the project, residents can go to ChiStreetWork — an interactive map with information on construction projects, special events and street closures.

When a service line has been connected to a new water main, the city recommends residents flush their plumbing of any sediment, rust or metals, including any lead to maintain water quality.

Sediment, rust and metals may collect in the aerator screen located at the tip of faucets. These screens should be removed prior to flushing.

Additional instructions on how to flush a home’s plumbing can be found here. A free lead testing kit can be obtained from the city by calling 311 or by filling out this online form.
