Here’s Where to Get Fresh, Local Produce On The Southeast Side Before Summer Disappears

With most farmers markets shutting down in the fall, you've still got a couple months to stock up on fresh fruits and veggies.

SOUTH SHORE — There’s no shortage of options for South Siders looking to stock their pantries with local crops.

Check out these five farmers markets before the season for fresh produce is up:

Pullman City Market, 11100 S. Cottage Grove Ave.
Wednesdays through Oct. 30, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What’s available: Corn, radishes, tomatoes, flowers, herbs, annuals and other seasonal produce.

Hyde Park Farmers Market5300 S. Harper Court
Thursdays through Oct. 31, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What’s available: Organic foods, fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, honey, jams, essential oils, skincare products, books, tutoring, toys and home décor.

The Hyde Park market is no simple shopping space; it has more of a festival atmosphere. A new local DJ keeps up the energy every week as shoppers browse products from nearly 50 vendors.

The market is held weekly, rain or shine.

What’s available: Produce, meat, eggs, cheeses and prepared foods.

The 61st Street market, run by the Experimental Station, is a food-only space; you won’t find trinkets for sale. The market is curated to avoid competition and make shopping easier, market manager Wendy Zeldin said.

“There’s never going to be like 12 taco people or 17 bakers,” said. “We try to have it based in mutualism and camaraderie.”

Chef demos and live music are regular occurrences, as well as a weekly “Market School” series, where attendees can learn about food and sustainability. Past Market School topics include worm composting and food’s impact on the climate.

In 2009, the 61st Street Market piloted the state’s Link Match program, where Link users receive up to $25 in matching funds at farmers markets.

The market heads inside the Experimental Station for the winter starting in November, and will remain there until April 2020.

What’s available: Eggs, scallions, onions, cherry tomatoes, radishes, cabbage, lettuce, mustard greens, kale, zucchini squash, cherries, blueberries, peaches, carrots, herbs.
