CHICAGO — A shooting at a vigil in the Riverdale neighborhood left a high school student dead and two others wounded Saturday night.

At 7:35 p.m. Saturday, the victims were at the outdoor gathering in the 13200 block of South Prairie Avenue when there was an argument and a woman and man fired shots, police said.

An 18-year-old man was hit in his back and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, police said. James Garrett later died from the gunshot wound in a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Garrett was a student at Butler College Prep and was studying to be a teacher, according to the Sun-Times.

Garrett, who had a 3.9 GPA, was the first senior in Butler’s class of 2019 to be accepted into college, the school said.

A 48-year-old man was hit in his arm and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center and a 20-year-old woman was hit in her arm and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Their conditions were not available but they were listed as “stable,” police said.

No one was in custody and an investigation was ongoing.
