CHICAGO — A 2-year-old boy was shot to death Saturday night in Hermosa, and police said he is the youngest child to be killed in a shooting this year.
At 10:17 p.m., the boy and an 18-year-old man were outside in the 2200 block of North Kilbourn Avenue when someone fired shots at them from the end of the street, police said.
The toddler was hit in his neck and he was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. Julien Gonzalez, of the 5500 block of West 63rd Place, was pronounced dead at 11:39 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
The man was hit in his left leg and he was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as “stable,” police said.
No one was in custody.
The 2-year-old boy was the youngest person to be killed in a shooting this year, according to Chicago Police spokesman Michael Carroll.
In response, Ald. Milly Santiago (33rd) and Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th) are teaming up with police on an outdoor roll call 6 p.m. Monday at Kilbourn and Belden avenues.
Villegas wrote on Facebook: “You don’t have to live in Hermosa to join us. This is a big deal to all Chicagoans, all Americans, all humans…”
