RAVENSWOOD — Police have apprehended a person in the killing of an 11-year-old boy and the wounding of a pregnant woman Wednesday morning in Ravenswood in what was an apparent domestic violence attack.
Police responded to 911 calls for help around 8 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment building in the 5900 block of North Ravenswood Avenue, where they found a 11-year-old boy and 33-year-old woman had been attacked, Chicago Police said.
The boy was found with an injury to his chest and was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said. The woman was found with multiple stab wounds and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition, according to police.
The woman is pregnant, neighbors said. It is not clear how the boy was attacked. Previous reports claimed he was shot, though police have yet to confirm those details.
The boy has been identified as Jaydone Perkins, who lived in the building where he was killed, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
A person is in custody in the attack, police said. It appears to have been a domestic-related attack, and the incident remains under investigation.
Police were seen searching through garbage dumpsters at the building where the attack took place.
A neighbor said the woman — who is eight months pregnant — and her children have lived in the area for years.
“She is a lovely one with lovely children who would play in the yard with my children. I’m speechless and at a loss for words,” said the neighbor, who asked to withhold her name.
At least five people were killed in a string of shootings overnight in Chicago, according to police.
“I hope this is not a precursor for the rest of the warm season,” Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th) said in an interview at the scene Wednesday.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
