CHICAGO — Severe storms, including possible tornadoes, are expected to hit Chicago on Friday.

The city and surrounding area are facing a severe weather threat 2-11 p.m. Friday, with possible damaging winds, tornadoes and damaging hail that could be the size of golf balls, according to the National Weather Service.

“This is a relatively rare, significant severe weather threat for our area,” according to the weather agency.

Two rounds of bad weather are expected: the first 2-6 p.m. and another 6-11 p.m.

During the thunderstorms, there could be winds of more than 75 mph that will be capable of taking down trees and causing structural damage, and there’s a possibility for tornadoes that could cause extensive damage, according to the weather agency.

The first round of storms could also see damaging hail that could leave dents in cars and siding. The agency warned the hail could get as big as golf balls.

People should make sure they have ways to get warnings about the weather and should check back for weather updates, according to the National Weather Service. The agency also advised people to secure objects that are outdoors and use caution if driving a tall vehicle due to the wind.

Strong winds — but not the thunderstorms — are expected to continue into Saturday morning, which could see gusts up to 45 mph, according to the weather agency.

Saturday will also be colder: While Friday could get as warm as 68 degrees, temperatures will fall to an expected high of just 45 degrees Saturday, according to the weather agency. Saturday could also see rain and snow.

Sunday will see tamer weather, with the skies sunny and breezy and a high of 53, according to the weather agency. More rain is possible Monday.
