GRAND BOULEVARD — An East Garfield woman has been charged with murder in the slaying of an 87-year-old last week in Douglas.

Shearly Gaines, 69, is charged with killing 87-year-old Mae Brown on Oct. 15 in Brown’s apartment in the Lincoln Perry Senior Complex, police said. Gaines was arrested Wednesday.

Officers found Brown’s body in her wheelchair after friends said they were unable to contact her. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death a homicide, saying the woman had “multiple injuries” from an assault, according to an ABC7 report.

Gaines is due in bond court Friday.

No further information was immediately available.
