CHICAGO — Divvy has shattered its record for bike rides, with more than 4 million taken so far in 2021.
The previous record was set in 2019, when Divvy saw 3.81 million rides taken throughout the year, according to a Chicago Department of Transportation and Lyft news release.
The new record doesn’t come as a surprise: Chicagoans have broken the record for number of rides in a day three times this year, according to CDOT. In July and again in August, Divvy broke monthly records by seeing more than 800,000 rides.
CDOT Commissioner Gia Biagi said Divvy’s rise in popularity “is happening in coordination with our record investments in new bikeways that are making it safer and easier for everyone to bike to the meaningful destinations in their neighborhoods.” The agency announced last week it’ll create or upgrade 100 miles of bike lanes in the next few years.
Lyft, which operates Divvy, has been expanding the bike rental system. It added 107 e-stations to the Northwest and Southwest sides earlier this summer.
