WEST TOWN — The owners of Damn Fine Coffee in Logan Square are bringing a coffee shop to a busy West Town intersection.

Prequel Coffee opens Saturday at 1957 W. Chicago Ave., near the corner of Damen and Chicago avenues. Prequel replaces Atomix, which closed in 2019 after 19 years in business.

The Prequel team announced its opening in an Instagram post Thursday. To celebrate opening weekend, customers can get a free drip coffee or cold brew with the purchase of a house-made pastry.

“We might have a little more work to do on the space, but that doesn’t mean you should be deprived of your coffee!” the post said. “So to kick things off, we’re opening with limited hours and offerings, but rest assured — we’ll be in full swing soon. So we invite you to make us part of your daily routine and witness the ongoing transformation.”

Prequel’s business will be carryout-only for a bit, the Instagram post said.

“We’re really looking forward to serving the neighborhood and thank you all for the support!”

Damn Fine co-owner Josh Miller announced the idea to replace Atomix in 2019. Miller worked at Atomix more than a decade ago and eventually opened his own spot, Damn Fine at 3317 W. Armitage Ave., with three others in 2016.

Miller could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday.

While the initial name for the shop was “Afterglow,” the name “Prequel” is a nod to the Damn Fine team’s roots as Atomix baristas, according to the cafe’s website.

Prequel will serve coffee roasted by Four Letter Word, tea from Spirit Tea and pastries from Danielle Snow.

Hours of operation are 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
