ENGLEWOOD — Residents can get prizes and free masks when they complete the census at a Tuesday event in Englewood.

The Census in the Ward event is noon-3 p.m. Tuesday. Census takers will be at the southwest corner of 63rd and Halsted streets to collect information from residents.

People can also fill out the census online in about five minutes.

Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th) and Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer are hosting the Census in the Ward event with local organizations, including R.A.G.E., Acclivus and the Georgia Doty HIV and Hepatitis Community Outreach.

Sixty-three percent of 16th Ward residents have completed the 2020 Census, putting the community 7 points ahead of the city’s 56 percent response rate. The ward still needs 4 points to beat its 2010 response rate.

Officials have been getting creative to boost census numbers, from hiring a “Census Cowboy” to visit undercounted areas to hosting video contests and drag queen-led town halls.

On-the-ground census outreach efforts are set to end Sept. 30, a month ahead of the original Oct. 31 deadline.
