CHICAGO — City beaches will open for swimming Friday.
The beach season runs the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, Sept. 2, according to the Park District.
Lifeguards are on duty during the season 11 a.m.-7 p.m daily starting Friday.
A color-coded flag system is used to tell beachgoers when it’s safe to swim. Green means safe, yellow urges caution and red flags indicate waves are unsafe.
The water is tested daily for pollutants, according to the Park District. Smoking and alcoholic drinks are not allowed on beaches.
The Park District offered a $475 training bonus for new lifeguards at park pools and beaches this summer as the agency looked to rebound from lifeguard shortages after the pandemic. The shortages caused some pools and beaches to close of have their hours limited.
Several beaches, including Fargo Beach, Howard Beach, Juneway Beach and Rogers Beach, are closed due to erosion. A full list of open city beaches — covering 26 miles of the lakefront — is here.
