CHATHAM — Two South Side pharmacies shortened their hours this month, surprising neighbors who came to rely on the all-day services.
Two 24-hour Walgreens locations now close at midnight, company officials told Block Club Monday. The locations are in Greater Grand Crossing, 11 E. 75th St., and Chatham, 8628 S. Cottage Grove Ave.
Pharmacy hours are 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekends at both locations. The new hours went into effect last week.
The change was “due to an operational decision,” a Walgreens spokesperson said in an email to Block Club. Company officials denied further comment on why the stores shortened their hours.
Neighbors flooded a Chatham Facebook page with disapproving comments on the company’s unexpected decision.
“When I’m home on vacation, the 75th & State location has been a late-night save me for years,” one neighbor commented. “That’s too bad for residents who legit need it.”
“If your kid is sick in the middle of the night, it’s good to have a place open for Pepto, Pedialyte, pain meds, etc.,” another neighbor commented. “Not everyone used it as a snack shop.”
Chatham neighbors have been frustrated by a string of closed businesses in the neighborhood.
Walmart closed its Chatham Supercenter, Walmart Health Center and the Walmart Academy, 8431 S. Stewart Ave., within a week in April.
Cinema Chatham, 210 W. 87th St., permanently closed in January “as a result of the business at this specific location no longer being economically viable,” parent company Emagine Entertainment told Block Club.
A recently renovated Chatham Kentucky Friend Chicken was one of three locations that abruptly closed earlier this month.
