CHICAGO — The city’s seeing some warmer days this week — but they might be the last ones of the season.

High temperatures in downtown Chicago will hit 80 degrees Tuesday, said Zachary Yack, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service. He said it’s unusual weather for late October — which typically sees more fall, breezy and overcast temperatures — but doesn’t quite hit the record high for Oct. 24, currently at 83 degrees.

“There’s basically a lot of strong, southerly and southwesterly wind, which is pumping a lot of warmer air into the area from the southern plains and the Gulf Coast,” he said. “That’s allowed us to warm up.”

Warmer weather in the high 60s and low 70s is expected through the end of the week, though rain is also part of the forecast. By the weekend, temperatures will drop into the 40s and 50s as a cold front passes through the area, Yack said.

The front will bring a “very cold and dry” airmass from Canada into Chicago, and overnight lows will dip into the 30s and possibly into the 20s over the weekend. It looks like the cooler temperatures will last into early next week, which could make for chilly trick-or-treating for Halloween on Tuesday.

When asked if this meant Chicago winter was on its way, Yack said, “It does look like that, yes.”
