BRIGHTON PARK — Residents of the 12th Ward can get car catalytic converters tagged with a unique PIN code and spray painted at an event this month to prevent them from being stolen.

The event Sunday and is taking place at Brighton Park Automotive, 967 S. Archer Ave., and Parkview Auto Repair, 4139 S. Western Blvd. Pre-registration is required and households can only have one car tagged.

To qualify, people must live in the 12th Ward, which includes parts of Brighton Park and McKinley Park, according to a flyer from Ald. Anabel Abarca (12th). They also must show proof of vehicle insurance and registration during their appointment.

Residents will be notified of their time-slot at a particular auto shop after they register. The times and locations will depend on how many people sign up.

Police districts and aldermanic offices across the city have been spray painting and marking catalytic converters to deter thieves and make scrap dealers think twice about accepting the car parts.

The spray paint and markings are only visible from underneath the car and won’t impact the car’s value, police have said.
