WEST RIDGE — A West Ridge liquor store clerk was fatally shot Monday night during an armed robbery, police said.

A robber armed with a handgun rode a bicycle just before 10 p.m. Monday to J&K Food and Liquor, 6320 N. Western Ave. The robber entered the store and demanded money before shooting the 66-year-old clerk once in his chest, police said.

The clerk was able to return fire but missed the gunman, police said in an incident report. The shooter ran away from the scene, police said.

The clerk was then taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he died around 11:43 p.m. Monday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

No money or items were taken from the store during the attempted robbery, according to police.
