ENGLEWOOD — A 4-year-old girl died Thursday night after she was accidentally shot inside an Englewood home.

The shooting happened about 6 p.m. in the 6400 block of South Carpenter Street, according to preliminary information from police. Another child inside the home found a gun, which accidentally fired and hit the girl in her chest, police said.

A police spokesperson identified the girl as Makaylah McKay.

“It was an accident,” Supt. David Brown said during a community walk on the West Side. “A visiting relative brought a gun to visit inside the home. It was in a bag. One of the young kids were playing with the guns and accidentally fired the gun, killing a small child.”

Makaylah was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital and pronounced dead.

Police are questioning an adult at the scene and detectives are investigating. No one is in custody.

“Whenever you bring guns into a situation, it’s much more dangerous,” Brown said. “You bring guns into any situation without proper safety, proper training, if you illegally possess a gun, it’s always more dangerous when a gun is in play.”
