UKRAINIAN VILLAGE — While many Chicagoans hunkered down as heavy snow pummeled the city Monday and early Tuesday, a group of friends in Ukrainian Village had another idea.

For the second time this winter, 19-year-old Daniel Zablotskiy and his friends decided to suit up and snowboard behind a car on the empty, snowy streets.

One friend drove the car that pulled the snowboarders, who held onto a rope. The route included side streets as well as Chicago, North, Damen and Milwaukee avenues.

“It was a lot of fun because not everyday will you be able to snowboard down the street that you take almost every day to school and other places,” Zablotskiy said. “Especially during these tough times this is more then just an enjoyment, it’s a one in a life time experience.”

Zablotskiy, an artist, was born in Ukrainian Village. He moved to Ukraine at the age of 4 and lived there until he was a sophomore in high school. He is currently a student at DePaul University and his previous snowboarding videos have gone viral, the Sun-Times reported.

Winters are comparable between Chicago and Ukraine, but it depends on the season, he said. At the moment, he said, there’s about two feet of snow on the ground in his hometown of Lviv, Ukraine.
