CHICAGO — A 14-year-old boy was severely injured when a firework exploded in his face Thursday night.

At 8:05 p.m., the boy was lighting a firework in the 10800 block of South Avenue G when it exploded, police said. The boy had severe facial trauma.

The boy was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was in critical condition, police said.
