GRANT PARK — Sueños Music Festival was evacuated and canceled Sunday night due to rain storms.

The evacuation and closing of the Grant Park festival grounds was announced on social media shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday due to inclement weather. It came after the start of two-day Sueños festival was delayed Sunday and some acts were canceled as storms rolled through the area.

The popular Latin music fest, now in its third year at Grant Park, opened its doors around 4 p.m. Sunday with a shortened lineup, organizers said on social media. Doors were scheduled to open at noon but were delayed due to storms.

Around half of Sunday’s scheduled lineup has been cancelled. Sueños organizers said those who bought tickets directly through their ticket vendor will be offered partial refunds.

“We did everything we could to keep the fest going,” organizers said in a statement posted online. “We must always put the wellbeing of fans, artists and staff first.”

A series of thunderstorms are set to move through the Chicago area through Sunday morning and early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. A second line of storms are forecast to roll through the area starting around 4 p.m.

The second line of storms could be more severe than the earlier rains, according to the National Weather Service’s local office.

Sueños was scheduled to take place Saturday and Sunday in Grant Park, with this year’s fest selling out in five days.

This year’s lineup includes headliners Pluma, a breakout superstar whose global popularity skyrocketed after releasing the single “Ella Baila Sola” last year. Other headliners include Rauw Alejandro, Ivan Cornejo and Maluma.

Sueños, which is Spanish for dreams, debuted in Grant Park in 2022 as a celebration of Reggaetón and Latin music. It’s become one of the nation’s largest Latin music festivals. Around 45,000 people attended in its first year, ballooning to 80,000 fans in 2023.

The festival will provide update on Twitter as weather conditions are monitored.
