WEST TOWN — A 44-year-old man was shot and killed Sunday morning in West Town’s Noble Square neighborhood, police said.

Jermaine Sykes was standing outside around 7:15 a.m. Sunday near 1070 N. Milwaukee Ave. when he was approached by an “unknown offender” who began shooting at him, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Sykes was shot “throughout the body” and pronounced dead at a local hospital. Chicago police said he was taken to the University of Chicago, but information from the medical examiner’s office said he was brought to Stroger Hospital. A police spokesperson on Monday did not clarify which hospital Sykes was taken to.

The shooting remains under investigation and no one is in custody, police said.

Sykes lived on the Near North Side, a little over a mile from where he was shot, according to data from the medical examiner’s office.

The shooting comes as the larger West Town area is experiencing a surge of armed robberies, some of which have been fatal. Police have not released any information about why Sykes was shot or if the incident is linked to other crimes in the area.
