NEAR WEST SIDE — Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Jeremih will take the stage in his hometown this weekend alongside hip-hop legends 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes.
At 7 p.m. Saturday,, “The Final Lap Tour” will make its way to the United Center, 1901 W. Madison St. The tour is in celebration of the 20th anniversary of 50 Cent’s Grammy-nominated debut album, “Get Rich Or Die Tryin’.”
South Side-based R&B artist Jeremih accompanied the North American leg of the tour, which ends on Sept. 22. He and Busta Rhymes will continue on the international leg of 50 Cent’s tour, which begins on Sept. 28.
Jeremih has had an extensive relationship with 50 Cent, going all the way back to 2010 when 50 hopped on Jeremih’s breakout hit, “Down On Me.” The song currently has over 330 million streams on Spotify.
Jeremih, a graduate of Morgan Park High School, recently returned to his music career after a seven-year hiatus. His last full-length release, “Late Nights,” was released on Def Jam in 2015.
In 2020, Jeremih contracted a case of COVID so severe that he wound up in the intensive care unit. He told BET.com that his friend Chance the Rapper was a frequent, inspiring visitor while he was in the hospital.
The singer kicked off 2023 by appearing on ABC 7’s Countdown Chicago New Year’s Eve show, performing his hit singles, “Don’t Tell ‘Em” and “Oui”. Now he’s working on making music again, saying in a 2022 interview about his earlier career, “I didn’t know what I was doing then but I know what I’m doing now.”
So far in 2023 he’s released singles “Changes” and “Crew Thang” (with Dvbbs and Sk8).
His appearance at United Center this week continues Jeremih’s return to the forefront of the R&B music scene. Tickets for the show can be purchased via Ticketmaster.
