PORTAGE PARK — An 8-year-old girl was shot and killed at a gathering in Portage Park Saturday, according to police.
The girl was with a group around 9:40 p.m. Saturday in the 3500 block of North Long Avenue when a person walked up from across the street and opened fire, police said in an incident report.
The 8-year-old was shot in her head and was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition before being pronounced dead, according to police.
The shooter, who police described as a “known offender,” then got into a struggle at the scene when a man tried to disarm him, police said. He was shot in his face during the struggle and was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition.
A weapon was recovered on the scene and the shooting is still under investigation, police said.
