EDGEWATER — A growing Black-owned coffee chain is coming to Edgewater, taking over a prominent storefront vacated by Starbucks.
Sip & Savor will open at 1070 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. this month, CEO Trez V. Pugh III announced on Instagram.
The storefront is part of the historical Belle Shores Apartments building, one of the anchors of a Bryn Mawr commercial district that has been battered by the pandemic and issues of public safety.
Starbucks moved out in October, days after its staff voted to unionize.
It is the first North Side location for Sip & Savor, which has four locations on the South Side and one in suburban Forest Park. It is also the second former Starbucks location that Sip & Savor has taken over after the company opened at the corner of State Street and Roosevelt Road last month.
Work on the Bryn Mawr Avenue location is ongoing. A building permit to conduct interior renovations was issued by the city in late June, city records show.
“We are ecstatic to bring our elite customer service and superior grade coffee to a neighborhood near you,” Pugh wrote on Instagram.

Pugh opened his first store in Hyde Park in 2012 and another in Bronzeville two years later. Pugh told Block Club in a September 2014 interview that he wanted to bring a “Cheers-like feel” to the neighborhood.
He opened a third location in the Rosenwald Courts Apartments five years later, at the behest of city officials who believed his cafe would complement the rebirth of one of Chicago’s beloved Black landmarks, he told Block Club in a 2019 interview.
The Black-owned Turner Haus Brewery opened within Sip & Savor’s Rosenwald location earlier this year.
