AUBURN GRESHAM — A 23-year-old mother was killed in a Wednesday afternoon shooting that also wounded her toddler son, the boy’s father and another man, police said.
The shooting occurred around 3:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of West 81st Street in Auburn Gresham, police said.
The three adults and child were standing on the sidewalk when a black vehicle approached, Chief of Patrol Brian McDermott said.. Multiple people got out and opened fire at the group, McDermott said.
The 2-year-old boy was shot in his foot, and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in good condition, police said.
The 23-year-old woman, whom police said was the toddler’s mother, was shot in her stomach, back and hand, and pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center.
A 29-year-old man was shot in his foot and taken to Christ hospital in good condition. Police said he is the 2-year-old’s father. A 62-year-old man was shot in his back and taken to Christ hospital in good condition, police said. It was not immediately clear if the older man was related to the other victims.
Detectives are investigating. No one was in custody as of Wednesday night, but police recovered a car they believe the shooters used, according to the Sun-Times.
“All acts of violence are difficult to deal, but it’s especially difficult when there’s a child involved,” McDermott said. “Thankfully this child is going to be okay, but I’d like to emphasize that acts of violence like this will not be tolerated in the city of Chicago, and we’ll do everything we can to bring these offenders to justice.”
Detectives are canvassing the area for any surveillance video of the shooting, McDermott said. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward, and you can submit an anonymous tip.
