Chicago Plant Party was launched by artist Tim Jarosz, who owns 150 house plants.
After years of selling his art and photography at fairs across the city, Jarosz said he realized Chicago didn’t have a market for “plant people.”
“I took the idea and ran with it,” he said.
The idea behind Chicago Plant Party is simple: The market is like your “typical craft fair in the city, but specifically for plant parents,” Jarosz said.
“Instead of going to 20 shops throughout the day, you’ll have 20 to choose from in one afternoon,” he said.
Jarosz, who recently moved from the city to suburban Barrington, said his idea has drawn an overwhelmingly positive response so far, with people eager to get involved.
The market is so popular that Jarosz has already lined up a second event later this summer. The second Chicago Plant Party — set for Aug. 13 at Sleeping Village — will feature a different crop of vendors, Jarosz said.
If the markets are successful, Jarosz hopes to host a few a year, he said.
“I’m hoping it takes off and — let’s say, five years down the line — it’s the Renegade Craft Fair of plants,” he said.
