UPTOWN — The professional dance community is putting on a Hollywood-themed drag show to support a health care fund for fellow dancers.
Dance Divas 2023 will hold three shows Saturday and Sunday at the Baton Show Lounge, 4713 N. Broadway. The theme of the Dance Divas event, now in its 15th year, is A Night at the Movies. It will feature male professional dancers in full drag honoring famous divas in movie history.
Saturday’s show is sold out, but tickets remain for the 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. shows Sunday. Tickets start at $75 and are online.
More than 40 male dancers from 12 Chicago companies will perform. Proceeds from the shows will go to The Dancers’ Fund, which provides short-term financial assistance for dance professionals with medical needs.
The dancers, who work for companies including Joffrey Ballet and Giordano Dance Chicago, are not regular drag performers, bringing a twist to the drag show format, artistic director Jeremy Plummer said.
“What’s truly unique about Dance Divas is that it brings together the choreography and athleticism of concert dance combined with the pageantry and excitement of drag performance,” Plummer said in a statement. It blends “the best elements of each art form to create a totally unique experience.”
The annual Dance Divas event has raised over $250,000 for Chicago dance professionals through the years.
“It’s a wonderful example of artists supporting other artists,” Nathaniel Ekman, executive director of Chicago Dancers United, which administers The Dancers’ Fund, said in a statement.
