CHICAGO — SNAP benefits will drop in March as federal pandemic relief giving families an extra monthly payment will expire.
The temporary boosts to SNAP, known as “emergency allotments,” started in April 2020 and will end at the beginning of March, according to a news release from the city.
SNAP benefits could decrease anywhere from $55 to $255 per person each month, according to the news release. The reductions will vary based on income level and household size, with the average drop being $86 a month for a one-person household.
During the pandemic, households have been receiving their regular SNAP benefits on the 1st and 20th of the month, and the extra emergency allotment after the 21st of each month.
Those in need of food assistance can go to one of hundreds of free food programs throughout the city, according to the news release. To find a nearby program Chicagoans can call 2-1-1 or visit here.
People who have experienced life changes — like an increase in household size, a decrease in income, higher expenses or child support — could be eligible for more in SNAP benefits. They can call the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s benefits hotline at 773-843-5416 or visit here.
