NORTH LAWNDALE — An exhibition of art from women of color will debut this weekend at the Urban Art Retreat Center.

The show starts 1 p.m. Saturday at the Liz Long Art Gallery at the Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center, 1957 S. Spaulding Ave. The showcase will run 1-4 p.m. Saturdays through March 23. Admission is free.

The exhibition will feature 40 pieces of art from women around the world and spotlight social justice issues and current events, organizers said.

Dianna Long, the curator, said the show was created around pieces from Simone Bouyer, who grew up in Chicago. It will include work from Bifei Ba, of China; Cassandra Robinson, of Wisconsin; and Olaosun Oluwapelumi, of Nigeria, among others.

Performance artist Dennissa Young is expected to perform for the opening show Saturday.

“The diversity of the art show is exciting,” Long said. “I think people are going to see an incredible variety of art on display. People will be wowed by what they see.”

The show was made possible by the Healing Chicago Together grant from the city’s Arts & Cultural Department, Long said. There are plans to host two more art shows, which will be devoted to animal agriculture’s effect on climate change and incarceration, Long said.
