LAKEVIEW — A Lakeview bakery serving empanadas and pies is closing this weekend as its owner prepare to open up shop in northern Michigan.
Empanada Mama and the Pie Man, 2933 N. Broadway, will close its doors for good Sunday, according to a Facebook post.
Co-owners and spouses Deon Benito-Cardillo and Oreste Cardillo decided to close the bakery so they could focus on their new business, the House of Pies, opening soon in Alanson, Michigan, which is in the far northern part of the state, more than six hours from Chicago near Mackinac Island.
“This was not an easy decision,” the owners wrote. “We love our customers and we love East Lakeview. You have all been incredibly kind to us.”

The couple started making their empanadas and pies about a decade ago while living in Chicago, according to the restaurant’s website. They mostly made the baked goods for special occasions and celebrations, but they decided to turn that into a brick-and-mortar business after spending five years in South Africa.
The Lakeview bakery is unrelated to the Empanada Mama restaurant opening in April in West Town.
