GARFIELD PARK — One man was injured Monday afternoon during a warehouse fire in Garfield Park, Fire Department officials said.
The fire began 2:18 p.m. in the 4700 block of West Lake Street near the Green Line tracks, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. It was not immediately known how the fire started, but crews could be seen tackling the blaze at the truss roof.
Fire Department officials have previously said a fire compromising a truss roof also will weaken the supporting walls, causing the roof to collapse. Langford said firefighters expected the Lake Street building roof to collapse, as well, so firefighters could not immediately go inside.
Three people were evacuated safely, but one person was bitten by a dog fleeing the fire, Langford said. The dog was placed in a cage shortly after, Langford said.
One man was taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment, Langford said.
Firefighters hope to contain the fire quickly because the area is lacking in available water main lines, Langford said.
