ANDERSONVILLE — The neighborhood’s newest ice cream shop is offering free scoops to customers as it celebrates its debut in Andersonville.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams will host its grand opening Thursday at its shop at 5306 N. Clark St. The store will give away free ice cream to all customers from 7-11 p.m. Thursday.

The first 50 people in line for the event will also receive gift bags, the ice cream shop wrote on Facebook. Jeni’s will not open on Thursday until 7 p.m. Its regular store hours will be from noon to 11 p.m. daily.

Jeni’s opened in the former Clark Street home of George’s Ice Cream & Sweets, a locally owned shop that closed last year. George’s opened in 2009 by the children of George Stotis, who owned and operated Chicago’s Recycle Shop on Clark Street in Andersonville for more than 30 years.

The Andersonville outpost is the ninth Jeni’s location in Chicago. There are also two suburban outposts for the upscale ice cream chain.

Jeni’s first Chicago location opened in September 2013 at 3404 N. Southport Ave. in Lakeview. The business was founded by award-winning ice cream maker Jeni Britton Bauer, who opened her first shop in Columbus, Ohio, in 2002.

Kilwin’s ice cream and chocolate shop is also looking to open in Andersonville.
