PORTAGE PARK — Three people were killed and one critically wounded in a Sunday morning shooting outside a Far Northwest Side bar, police said.

About 2:30 a.m., people inside a bar got into an argument that turned into a fight, which spilled out into the street in the 5500 block of West School Street, police said. Someone fired shots, hitting two men and two women outside the bar, Cmdr. Joseph Brennan said at a news conference, citing preliminary information.

Investigators think only one shooter was involved, and that person drove off in a dark SUV, Brennan said. A police spokesman said Monday afternoon detectives are questioning a person of interest in the shooting.

Ricky Vera, 50, died at the scene after he was shot in his head and chest, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Mario Pozuelos, 26, and Mercedes Tavares, 24, were shot multiple times and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police and the medical examiner’s office said.

Pozuelos lived in northwest suburban Franklin Park and Tavares in south suburban Chicago Heights, according to the medical examiner’s office. No hometown for Vera was immediately available.

A 25-year-old woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound in her head, police said.

No one is in custody. Detectives are investigating and reviewing nearby surveillance footage.
