LOGAN SQUARE — One person was killed and a firefighter was injured in a house fire early Tuesday in Logan Square.

Before 5 a.m., the fire engulfed a home in the 1800 block of North Sawyer Avenue, Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said.

Fire officials told WGN the home was in “hoarder conditions,” which made battling the blaze difficult.

Firefighters put out the fire about 7:10 a.m., according to the Fire Department’s Twitter account.

“It’s hard to do a search when the conditions are like that,” a fire chief told WGN.

The fire killed a man in his 70s, according to WGN.

A firefighter who was reportedly injured after accidentally falling off a ladder is being evaluated in the hospital but “should be fine,” Merritt said.

No further information was available.
