LOGAN SQUARE — Norwegian church Minnekirken’s annual Christmas bazaar is back this weekend with treats galore.

This year’s Taste of Norway is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church, 2614 N. Kedzie Ave., more commonly referred to as Minnekirken.

There will be a wide array of freshly baked Norwegian cookies and treats, from Finske Pinnar or Finnish fingers to Peppernøtter or spice cookies, along with Norwegian crafts and knitwear. Church leaders will also serve up ride porridge.

A decades-long tradition, Taste of Norway is the Logan Square church’s biggest fundraiser of the year. All of the proceeds from the event go toward maintaining Minnekirken, which was built in 1912 and recently underwent a massive renovation.

Minnekirken has put on a Christmas bazaar the weekend before Thanksgiving since 1968. The tradition started with a group of women parishioners who put on a bake sale to help the church out of hard times.

The women called themselves the Christmas Girls, or the Julejentene.

Over the years, the bake sale grew into a more elaborate holiday festival celebrating all facets of Norwegian culture.

The event moved online in 2020 due to the pandemic. Last year’s festival was held in person.

Minnekirken is one of the most recognizable buildings in Logan Square. The church is also one of just two remaining churches in the United States where Norwegian is the primary language spoken.
