SOUTH SHORE — Two people were killed Friday evening at a South Shore grocery store when a worker with a gun intervened in an armed robbery, police said.
About 6:20 p.m. Friday, a man walked into the El Barakah Supermarket near 73rd Street and Coles Avenue and took out a handgun, police said.
Ali Hasan, a 63-year-old man with a concealed carry license who worked at the supermarket, saw what was happening and shot the man trying to rob the store, according to the Sun-Times. The man shot back, hitting Hasan in his chest and back, police said.
The armed robber died at the scene, police said. Hasan was taken to a hospital where he died within an hour, according to the Sun-Times.
Three guns were found at the scene, police said.
Hasan was a Palestinian immigrant who lived in Berwyn with his five children and was described by those who knew him as “one of the most kind individuals you could ever meet,” according to the Sun-Times.
