CHICAGO — Rainbow Cone‘s Beverly location is switching things up by staying open all winter — for the first time since it started 96 years ago.
The famed ice cream shop, 9233 S. Western Ave., has experimented with being open during the winter in years past with limited hours, but it closed for the season in 2020. That won’t happen this year: Rainbow Cone will be open all winter with full hours, the company announced on Facebook.
The shop will be open 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. daily.
Rainbow Cone is also launching a holiday flavor, Candy Cane, that will be available in scoops or shakes. It’ll come out Nov. 14.
The company will also release Rainbow Cone ice cream sandwiches this winter.
Rainbow Cone has been a Far South Side favorite since it opened in 1926, serving up a cone topped wit slices of orange sherbet, pistachio, Palmer House, strawberry and chocolate. It’s added doughnuts, cakes and cake rolls to its menu.
Rainbow Cone has expanded in recent years, opening food trucks and locations at Navy Pier and suburban Harwood Heights, Mount Prospect, Skokie, Lakemoor and Darien.
The company has partnered with another Chicago favorite — Buona Beef — for the expansions.
