EAST GARFIELD PARK — Three children, one just 3 years old, were among 14 people wounded during a mass drive-by shooting Monday night in East Garfield Park.
At 9:20 p.m., a group of people were standing on corner of California Avenue and Polk Street at a vigil when two people in a dark SUV fired shots, police said. Fourteen people were shot — including three children who were 3, 11 and 13 years old — and a driver hit a woman who was trying to run away from the shooting, police said.
One car was involved in the shooting, but investigators think there were at least two shooters, Supt. David Brown said at a news conference, citing preliminary information.
Some of the shooting was caught on nearby police observation device video, Brown said.
It was not clear what led up to the shooting, Brown said.
“We know it was a drive-by, we know it happened in just a few seconds,” Brown said. “It begins and it was over in about three seconds, the car pulling out after driving by and shooting randomly into the crowd. We don’t have any motive, we don’t have any offender identified, we don’t have any conflicts on this corner where it happened.”
Brown appealed for anyone with information to contact police. People can submit anonymous tips online.
