OLD TOWN — Police shot and killed a man in Old Town early Sunday after police said they were searching the area for a man who pulled a gun on a neighbor.

At about 5 a.m. in the 400 block of West Blackhawk Street, officers on patrol were investigating reports of a man with a gun in the area, police said. A resident flagged down the officers and told them a man had pointed a gun at them, Police Supt. David Brown said.

The witnesses gave officers a description of the man and officers searched and found him, the top cop said at a Sunday news conference.

But when officers tried to stop the man, he took off running, Brown said.

“There’s a foot chase, and they lose him. The offender escapes,” Brown said.

Officers later saw the man again and tried to detain him. That’s when one officer shot and killed the man. Brown said a gun was found at the scene, as well as bullet casings that did not match police officers’ guns.

Police leaders did not initially answer questions about whether the man shot at police. At a press conference Monday, Deputy Chief Jill Stevens said “shots were fired at and by police.”

The shooting is now under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates all police shootings.

“A full investigation from COPA will determine whether or not a weapon was fired, whether casings match the gun,” Brown said.

One officer was taken to the hospital with very minor injuries, Brown said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office had not identified the person who was killed as of Monday afternoon.

Dozens of police officers were on the scene investigating the incident Sunday, taping off almost the entire stretch of Blackhawk Street from Sedgwick to Mohawk streets. The incident appeared to occur mainly near the south entrance to the alley on Blackhawk Street, between Hudson and Cleveland streets.

At least 20 shell casing markers were visible on the sidewalk and alley Sunday morning.

The shooting happened one block west of a separate shooting earlier this summer outside the Marshall Field Garden Apartments public housing complex, in which Garvis Jones, 31, was killed.

About 20 minutes after the police shooting, officers responded to another fatal shooting in the 300 block of West Division Street, about a half-mile away, Stevens said.

Responding officers found a 38-year-old man who had been shot multiple times, Stevens said. Witnesses said he had been involved in an argument with another man when a third person came around the corner on foot and opened fire, Stevens said. The shooter fled on foot. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead.

The medical examiner’s office identified him as Timothy Coleman.

Brown said the two incidents were unrelated.

No information or description was available for the shooter in the Division Street incident.
