LOOP — Honking horns and cheers for Mexico echoed throughout Downtown late Thursday night as hundreds flocked in celebration of Mexican Independence Day.
The holiday, commemorated Friday, is in recognition of the country’s independence from Spain after an 11-year war that ended in 1821.
DuSable Lake Shore Drive was packed with cars full of flag-waving revelers Thursday night, and salt trucks blocked off the entrances to some streets in hopes of quelling the celebrations.
Fireworks were set off Downtown throughout the night.
If you are traveling by car this weekend, plan accordingly, as the impromptu parades tend to last for hours.
