LINCOLN PARK — Monarch butterflies will begin their migration from Chicago to Mexico this weekend.
Chicagoans will be able to watch thousands of the orange and black butterflies flutter across the city for the next few days as they start their journey to Mexico for the winter. In the past, the Museum Campus has been a prime viewing spot.
To celebrate, the Chicago Academy of Sciences and Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum will host the fifth Flutter into Fall event 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Nature Museum, 2430 N. Cannon Drive.
There will be activities for people of all ages, including monarch-related crafts with representatives from the National Museum of Mexican Art and guided plant and bug walks, according to a news release.
The event is included with admission to the museum.
Attendees also can experience two first flight butterfly releases and learn about monarchs with Chief Curator Doug Taron.
Monarch butterflies were listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature this summer, but Chicagoans can help by learning about monarchs and planting pollinator-friendly gardens.
