WEST LOOP — A west suburban man faces murder charges after police said he intentionally drove into a 22-year-old pedestrian early Sunday in the West Loop and drove away.

Joseph Verdone, of suburban Hillside, was arrested Tuesday. At 5 a.m. Sunday, he intentionally drove a car onto the sidewalk in the 100 block of North Ogden Avenue, hitting and killing Enrique Martinez, police said.

Verdone was charged with first-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in Cook County bond court Friday.

Martinez was walking along the sidewalk when the driver of a dark sedan hit him, police said earlier this week. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and detectives were investigating the crash as a homicide.

Earlier this week, a relative of Martinez declined comment.

A Facebook fundraiser was set up for Martinez’s family to give him “the memorial he deserves.” It has raised over $4,000 as of Thursday afternoon.
