DOWNTOWN — A cocktail lounge opening soon is a nod to Chicago World’s fair and its neighbor Union Station.

Afterbar, 310 S. Canal St., opens Sept. 19 and will feature cocktails with ingredients one might have seen during the 1890s, when Chicago hosted the World’s Columbian Exposition. Its modern interior has large sliding doors to a patio facing Green at 320, a 1.5-acre private green space with lush landscaping, seating and an amphitheater.

“Green space is not very common, especially around the Loop area. I’ve overheard a few people say, ‘Oh my gosh, this is like an oasis,'” said Patrick McGoldrick, beverage director for Afterbar and Canal Street Market & Eatery.

An extension of the lounge, Canal Street Market & Eatery, opened Aug. 25 on the ground floor of 314 S. Canal St. and offers sit-in dining area and a grab-and-go market.

The restaurant portion of the market has an Italian-inspired menu where guests can sit in a naturally-lit dining room with high ceilings and large windows facing the park.

The menu features antipasti, pizza, pasta, entrees and desserts for $6-$28. The restaurant also features a 3-6 p.m. happy hour with $9 pizzas, $7 glasses of wine, $6 house cocktails and beer specials.

Afterbar’s cocktail menu is being finalized, but it will feature a variety of before- and after-meal drinks, McGoldrick said.

“I’d like to do a riff on 20th century cocktails and kind of tied into the World’s Fair theme,” McGoldrick said. “For the nightcap or after-dinner section, [maybe] a black Manhattan on there. Probably some more other richer, sweeter dessert cocktails, Irish cream, chocolate … we’re gonna have fun with it.”
