WEST LOOP — A security guard shot and killed a man wielding an ax Monday outside a Greektown marijuana dispensary, police said.
About 10 a.m., the man with the ax and the security guard had a “verbal altercation” outside the Zen Leaf dispensary at 222 S. Halsted St., police said. The man swung an ax at the security guard, hitting his leg, police said.
After a struggle, the guard shot and killed the man with the ax, police said.
The security guard, 37, was taken in good condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with lacerations to his left leg, police said. The man wielding the ax was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The area was shut down for about an hour as officers investigated. They found a handgun and an ax outside the dispensary, police said.
A police spokesman could not provide further details.
In a statement, a Zen Leaf dispensaries spokesman confirmed someone attacked a contracted security guard with a weapon outside the dispensary.
“The third party security guard is recovering in the hospital,” the spokesman said.
An employee at the West Loop dispensary confirmed the shop reopened Tuesday after being closed Monday. He said the security guard remained in good condition.
