CHICAGO — Block Club Chicago was named the Best Online-only News source in an international competition Monday.
In all, Block Club received three awards through an annual competition hosted by Editor and Publisher, a trade magazine that covers newspapers and other news sources. Organizations from around the world submit entries to the competition, which is judged by professional journalists.
The nonprofit, non-partisan news site — which launched in 2018 — was named the Best Online-only News source.
“Block Club Chicago embodies what an online news outlet should be — bursting with valuable, local information and packaged in an easy to consume format,” a judge wrote.
Block Club was also awarded for having the best overall website design among publishers with 1 million or more unique visitors. It also received first place for the best redesign/relaunch of its website.
Block Club has published nearly 14,000 stories since its launch, covering everything from Chicago’s beloved Chance the Snapper to vaccine scandals at Loretto Hospital. In the past year, its staff has answered more than 900 questions from Chicagoans through its free, bilingual COVID-19 hotline, connecting residents with testing, vaccines, financial relief and more.
