EDGEWATER — When Daniel Barat was building out Rewired Pizza Cafe and Bar, he noticed something slightly disconcerting for a small business owner: a steady stream of delivery drivers for a certain national pizza chain.

“We would be sitting there doing research and development, and I kept seeing Domino’s drivers drive by,” Barat said. “I said, ‘We should rebrand the whole place as ‘Dominoes.'”

Barat is making good on the idea, as Rewired is “dressed up” as “Dominoes” through Saturday.

“Dominoes,” 1102 W. Thorndale Ave., is serving up a local take on Domino’s menu. That includes the Hawaii Honolulu (bacon, pineapple, ham, red pepper and red sauce), a spinoff of the pizza chain’s Honolulu Hawaiian. There’s also the Phil’s Cheese Steak (white sauce, steak, peppers and onion), based on Domino’s Philly Cheese Steak pizza.

The pop-up will also serve versions of the national pizza chain’s baked pasta dishes, including an Alfredo chicken and a carbonara chicken. A special drink menu is inspired by fast food beverages, including an orange creamsicle slushie.

Signs and restaurant decor also play on the Domino’s logo and its blue-red color scheme.

“It’s a little play on their menu,” Barat said. “It was super fun. I told the staff, ‘Have fun for 10 days and keep it light.'”

Rewired Pizza Cafe & Bar has rebranded as “Dominoes” for Halloween.

Rewired opened in November 2020 on Thorndale Avenue after moving from its previous home on Berwyn Avenue. The old spot is being redeveloped into an apartment complex.

In the process, Barat rebranded Rewired from mostly a coffee shop to a restaurant-cafe, debuting pizza service and a bar. Barat also owned a Rewired location in Lakeview from 2017 to 2019.

Barat said he and his team considered hosting more pop-ups at the new Rewired, but they have not gotten around to it until now, with the pandemic getting in the way. With Halloween this week, it was perfect time to try it out, Barat said.

An inspiration for the tongue-in-cheek homage was the depiction of McDonald’s spoof “McDowell’s” from the 1988 film, “Coming To America.”

The pop-up has been well received by customers, even if it took more explaining in some cases, Barat said.

“There was some confusion originally, but once people learned it was a Halloween costume, they went with it. Most people appreciate it,” Barat said.

“Dominoes” menu is available 11 a.m.-10 p.m. through Saturday. For more information on the pop-up, click here.
