CHICAGO — Small businesses and nonprofits struggling during the pandemic could be eligible for grants under a new city program.

The Chi Biz Strong Grant Program will dole out up to $10,000 to small businesses and nonprofits that have lost income or are shouldering increased expenses because of COVID-19. Businesses must not make more than $3 million in annual revenue and those that haven’t already received pandemic assistance will be prioritized. The program aims to give out $20 million in total.

Additionally, the Outdoor Dining Grant Program provides up to $5,000 to help restaurants and bars buy equipment for outdoor dining. The city plans to award $2 million in those grants.

The majority of the funding will go businesses in lower incomes neighborhoods, city officials said. Certain businesses like junk yards and pawn shops aren’t eligible.

To help people learn more about the program, the city is hosting several webinars.
